Aging of Japan

The ageing of Japan is thought to outweigh all other nations, as the country is purported to have the highest proportion of elderly citizens; 33.0% are above age 60, 25.9% are aged 65 or above, 12.5% aged 75 or above, as of September 2014.〔(Population estimates by Age )〕
== Ageing dynamics ==
In 1989, 11.6% of the population was 65 years or older, with projections that 25.6% of the population would be over 65 by 2030. In 2011, 23.1% of the population were 65 and above, while 11.4% were already 75 and above,〔(Population Estimates by Age (5-Year Age Group) and Sex )〕 now the world's highest (though 2010 Census age results have not yet been released).
This change, referred to as population aging (', ), will have taken place in a shorter span of time than in any other country.
Those aged 65 and above increased from 26.5 million in 2006 to 29.47 million in 2011, an 11.2% increase.〔(Japan's Elderly Population Rises to Record, Government Says ) Bloomberg.〕
